Recollection

Recollection Version 3.pdf

Recollection, written for and in collaboration with Kaitlin Miller, pays homage to my various and personal explorations of the harp and its repertoire. Inspired by my memories and experiences of Kaitlin at the harp, this work contains the sound world that I was immersed in for countless hours.

Memory has the tendency to morph our perception of time, only leaving behind hazy and vague impressions. This eclectic nature of memory guided me in my composition process. The piece ebbs and flows between different tempi and spaces, cluttering the listeners' sense of time.

This music aims to capture the disjointed and mystified feeling of loose collections of memories, where one cannot quite recall the exact sequence of events. In this piece, many different impressions, gestures, and ideas from my exploration of the harp collide into one, creating a musical space that operates in a rhythmic and gestural language that will hopefully sound somewhat familiar to many harpists. Ultimately, my hope is that this piece can share with the listener my impression of the harp and the sound space that I have come to love over the years.
